WTF Is The Atlas Scribe?

Outfitting Humans for Humaning.

The Atlas Scribe is a rather peculiar world devoted to investigating the extraordinary business of being human. It is part independent field investigation, part philosophical playground, part educational institution, part outfitter, and part elaborate satire of the systems humanity has constructed around its own existence.

Its central subject is The Fuckery: the sprawling terrain of human behavior, relationships, beliefs, adaptations, expectations, rules, institutions, inherited arrangements, and assorted complications that make up ordinary life.

Humans have spent thousands of years building civilizations, developing knowledge, creating useful things, making spectacular mistakes, and passing the results along to subsequent generations. Somewhere in that process, a remarkable amount of complicated shit became so familiar that people stopped noticing it was complicated.

The Atlas Scribe finds that worth investigating.

Not everything humans have created is nonsense. Some of it is ingenious, necessary, beautiful, or genuinely useful. Some of it works remarkably well, provided nobody looks too closely at who is paying the price. Other arrangements have survived primarily because everyone involved has been assured that this is simply how things are done.

Atlas is interested in the difference.

The Fuckery: Where Humaning Happens

Imagine the human condition as an enormous, unruly landscape. It contains everything people have built, inherited, learned, misunderstood, improved, damaged, normalized, and occasionally set on fire while attempting to make things better.

Relationships grow there. So do workplaces, governments, markets, traditions, identities, obligations, cultural expectations, and all the invisible machinery that influences what people believe they should do with their lives.

The trouble is that much of this machinery operates without announcing itself. An individual encounters a problem and assumes it belongs entirely to them, when part of the explanation may lie in an expectation, a relationship, an institution, or a system that existed long before they arrived.

Atlas calls this landscape The Fuckery: the nursery of the human condition.

She studies what grows there, how it got there, what sustains it, who benefits from it, who carries its costs, and what happens when people begin questioning explanations they've been handed as established facts.

An investigation might begin with something as ordinary as an unreasonable expectation at work and end up somewhere in the history of organizational hierarchies, cultural conditioning, economic incentives, or the human tendency to confuse familiarity with truth.

This is why Atlas needs maps.

Meet Atlas: The Crock of Bullshit Hunter

Atlas Scribe is the observing, investigating, mapmaking figure at the center of this world. She is not a guru, a life coach, a dispenser of universal answers, or an authority on how anybody else ought to live.

She's a hunter of curious realities, questionable explanations, hidden arrangements, and the peculiar bullshit humans sometimes mistake for the natural order of things.

Her work begins with observation. Something doesn't add up, so she follows it. She examines the available evidence, traces the surrounding systems, tests assumptions, and attempts to distinguish what is actually happening from the stories people have constructed about it.

Sometimes the investigation produces a useful explanation. Sometimes it uncovers a completely different problem. Sometimes the evidence contradicts the original theory, and an otherwise lovely map has to be thrown in the fucking bin.

And sometimes the appropriate conclusion is simply, “Fuck if I know.”

That is not considered an institutional failure. It is considerably more honest than manufacturing certainty where none exists.

The Atlas Scribe is built on the proposition that understanding your circumstances is useful, but nobody else gets to claim ownership of your conclusions or your decisions. Atlas may investigate the terrain and offer a map. The person navigating it retains the wheel.

The WTF University: Where The Fuckery Becomes a Field of Study

Eventually, Atlas's investigations became too numerous, interconnected, and sprawling to fit comfortably on one desk. One question led to another, individual experiences revealed larger systems, and the field notes began reproducing at an alarming rate.

The obvious solution was to establish a fucking university.

The WTF University (WTFU) is the independent educational institution within The Atlas Scribe, dedicated to studying human fuckery. Its founding Professor, Atlas Scribe, holds a PhD in Le Bullshit Humain—Piled High and Deep, naturally—and operates a University of One with an unusually liberal policy toward intellectual disagreement.

WTFU has two schools. The School of Hard Knocks & Fuckery examines the lived experience of being human: the beliefs, behaviors, relationships, stories, struggles, and underlying mechanisms that shape everyday life. The School of YOGA³—Your Own Gaming Adventure, Analysis & Application—approaches life as a complicated game whose rules are often inherited, poorly explained, and subject to interference from other players.

The university also has a Shituational Degree Catalog, a Hard Knocks Placement Exam, a Center of Leadershit, and the Sacred Cow BBQ & Roadhouse, where cherished assumptions may be subjected to further examination.

Its mascot is a bear, which makes more sense than it might initially appear. Bears pay attention to their surroundings, assess threats and resources, conserve energy when necessary, and adjust their behavior to actual conditions. They are not known for pursuing quarterly performance targets to satisfy a committee.

WTFU's approach is similarly concerned with observing and orienting before deciding what to do.

The institution is satirical. The questions are real. Its purpose is not to graduate obedient followers of Professor Atlas but to make room for inquiry, disagreement, experimentation, and the occasional discovery that everybody involved has been studying the wrong fucking thing.

The Shoppe: Equipment for the Human Fuckery You're Dealing With

The Shoppe is where Atlas's investigations become something people can actually take into their own lives.

When an interesting pattern emerges from the terrain, Atlas may identify a CROC: Curiouser Reality — Observed & Captured. She investigates it, maps the underlying arrangements, and develops the useful findings into a Crock.

Crocks are field equipment: maps, audits, guides, and other practical resources designed to help people examine their circumstances, understand the machinery involved, and consider what they might want to do about it.

The distinction matters. A Crock is not an instruction manual for becoming the sort of human somebody else thinks you should be. It is equipment for exploring the reality you're already dealing with, including the possibility that the available explanation is incomplete, misleading, or simply full of shit.

The Shoppe organizes its investigations around recognizable human questions: What the fuck is happening to me? Why am I carrying all this? What do I actually want? Am I getting played? How do I up my game? Who the fuck am I supposed to be?

Alongside the Crocks is Atlas Field Gear™, the physical equipment of this peculiar expedition: mugs, notebooks, posters, and other objects that carry observations, humor, and reminders from the field.

Because a serious investigation into the human condition can coexist perfectly well with a coffee mug that says something gloriously inappropriate.

The Fuckery Governmental™: The Bureaucracy of Human Absurdity

Given the amount of institutional nonsense Atlas encounters, it was perhaps inevitable that this world would eventually acquire a government of its own.

The Fuckery Governmental™ is a fictional satirical government devoted to the official recognition, classification, documentation, and bureaucratic administration of human absurdity.

It has the trappings of authority: seals, declarations, official merchandise, administrative language, and a Supreme Court Jester™ who has heard enough shit.

Its citizenship policy is admirably efficient. Everyone is already a citizen. No application is necessary, and no opt-out procedure has been provided.

Unlike an actual government, The Fuckery Governmental™ does not claim jurisdiction over your life. Its jurisdiction is comedic, its authority imaginary, and its subject matter supplied in inexhaustible quantities by humanity itself.

The satire works because so much real-life absurdity arrives wrapped in respectable language. Expectations become obligations without discussion. Responsibilities migrate to whoever is competent enough to handle them. Institutions produce elaborate procedures to address problems their own procedures helped create.

TFG gives this machinery the grand governmental treatment it so richly deserves, complete with official artifacts suitable for a civilization that has apparently decided all this is perfectly normal.

IN ABSURDITY WE TRUST.

A Word About the Philosophy Underneath the Profanity

For all its fictional institutions and enthusiastic swearing, The Atlas Scribe has a fairly serious intellectual disposition.

It values curiosity over certainty, investigation over assumption, and personal agency over prescribed answers. It is suspicious of explanations that depend entirely on authority, tradition, popularity, or the insistence that everybody else is doing it.

There is something of the ancient Cynic philosopher Diogenes in its spirit: a willingness to challenge pretension, examine social conventions, and ask uncomfortable questions about the things people have agreed to value.

But Atlas is not interested in rejecting everything humans have created merely for the satisfaction of being contrary. The interesting work is distinguishing what is useful from what is harmful, what is supported by evidence from what is merely asserted, and what an individual has actually chosen from what they've quietly inherited.

The profanity is part of that world, not a substitute for its substance. Human beings have used taboo language for centuries to express frustration, humor, intimacy, emphasis, dissent, and the occasional entirely reasonable objection to ridiculous circumstances.

Atlas sees no compelling reason to abandon such a versatile piece of human technology.

Nor does she believe that serious thinking requires solemn language. A question can be intellectually worthwhile and still begin with “What the fuck?”

Indeed, quite a few worthwhile investigations do.

So What the Fuck Is The Atlas Scribe, Really?

It is a fictional world built around the very real world humans inhabit.

Its university studies the terrain. Its Shoppe supplies equipment for navigating it. Its government satirizes the institutions and absurdities that populate it. Its Scribe follows the questions, examines the evidence, and maps what she can without pretending to possess the final answer to human existence.

These are different expressions of the same underlying curiosity: what is actually happening here, how did it come to be this way, and what might become possible once we understand it a little better?

The Atlas Scribe doesn't promise to fix humanity. That would require an extraordinary budget, a questionable degree of confidence, and possibly several centuries of committee meetings.

It offers something more modest and considerably more interesting: an invitation to observe the world we've made, investigate the things we've normalized, question the explanations we've inherited, and approach the business of being human with curiosity, humor, and a little more room to make our own decisions.

The Atlas Scribe. Outfitting Humans for Humaning.

The world is absurd. We brought documentation.
